EBM metal 3D printer introduced to North American market

Japanese scientific instrument manufacturer JEOL Ltd. has begun selling its metal additive manufacturing system in North America. Sales, service, and support for the JAM-5200EBM 3D printer will be handled by JEOL USA, Peabody, Mass.

The EBM (electron beam melting), metal-powder-bed printer is equipped with a long-life cathode (1,500-plus hours) to reduce downtime; incorporates a helium-free build environment that eliminates smoke and trapped gases; facilitates 24/7 production because of its remote-monitoring capabilities; and processes high-temperature alloys, thanks to a maximum build temperature of 1,100 degrees C. The machine has a capacity of 250 mm dia. by 400 mm high and currently processes Ti6Al4V, Ni718, and pure copper.

The company says the 5200EBM’s technology makes it well-suited for serial production of high-quality, reproducible metal parts used in the aerospace, automotive, and energy sectors. It plans to debut the printer at the RAPID + TCT trade show, scheduled for May 17-19 in Detroit.
