Still Building America—Giving a young welder a chance
- By Josh Welton
- February 17, 2016
David Huisman, 21, has already been welding for five years, both above ground and underwater.
David specializes in aluminum TIG welding. Employed by Bennington Marine in Elkhart, Ind., he helps fabricate pontoon boats. Engine hatches and gates for Bennington’s high-end R series boats are his focus.
Hiring David worked out so well for the company that it now has made bringing in young welders from ECC a habit! David paved the way for the skilled workers behind him.
Although he’s still at Bennington now, there was a period of about a year when he left to follow another dream: underwater welding. David headed to New Jersey to train.
“After school (in New Jersey) I got a job diving in Lake Michigan for about a year, but the pay and job itself weren’t how I thought they would be, so I decided to go back to Bennington for good.”
Back at the company that hired him right out of vocational school, David has an understanding boss. After work he gets the run of the shop to create metal art.
He’s a young man with a lot to offer.
“My main goal is to move up within a company, or to advance my skills to other rare metals like titanium and stainless. Maybe step up to pipe welding.
“My advice to anyone getting into the welding field, is to constantly improve yourself and to never become complacent with your work.”
