DeWys Mfg. creates customized robotic weld cell

Precision metal fabricator DeWys Mfg. Inc. has built and assembled Megatron, a new large weldment cell, at its facility in Marne, Mich. This robotic weld cell includes a FANUC ARCmate 120ic robot; a custom-built, CNC, H-type cam indexer-driven positioner; and a Lincoln Electric Power Wave i400 welding machine. The positioner allows parts to be rotated to eight different positions for weld access, allowing for complex weldments to be achieved in one setup.

The new weld cell also employs a 0.5-ton overhead bridge crane, which simplifies removal of heavy weldments from the custom-built, high-precision jigs. The cell is customizable to meet customers’ needs. It can accept a variety of electronics and sensors, such as inductive proximity sensors, to help ensure parts are located properly in the jigs. In addition, the cell welds three times faster than manual welding, according to the company.

Repeatability is +/-0.0008 in. at a 24-in. radius from the jig rotational centerpoint. The cell accommodates parts up to 60 in. long.
