U.S. Steel appoints general manager

United States Steel Corp. today announced the appointment of George H. Thompson to the position of general manager-service centers, electrical, agricultural, and industrial equipment. The appointment was effective September 1.

Thompson is responsible for marketing and sales to U. S. Steel's service center, electrical, agricultural, and industrial equipment customers. He reports to Joseph R. Scherrbaum, vice president - sales, and is based in the company's Chicago-area sales office.

A Pittsburgh native, Thompson began his career in 1987 as a management associate in the tubular products division at Pittsburgh headquarters, and was promoted to supervisor of business planning at the Fairfield Works Pipe Mill the next year. From 1989 to 1999, he progressed through several increasingly responsible managerial positions in sales and marketing for tubular and sheet products. From 1999 to 2003, he oversaw the company's sales to appliance customers, and most recently served as director - sales, tubular products.

Thompson earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Allegheny College in 1987.
