The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has announced that Daniel R. DiMicco is the 2004 recipient of the Gary Memorial Medal. DiMicco, former AISI chairman and vice chairman, president, and CEO of Nucor Corp., was honored at the May AISI General Meeting in San Francisco.
Presenting the award to DiMicco, AISI Chairman and President and CEO of IPSCO Inc. David Sutherland praised DiMicco for his leadership within the North American steel industry during a particularly challenging yet transforming period of change.
AISI President and CEO Andrew G. Sharkey said, “Dan DiMicco’s industry and association leadership provided strength and continuity during a period when the industry was transforming itself to become a world leader in advanced technologies, productivity, and efficiency. He continues to champion the industry and the future of manufacturing in North America, to the betterment of steel producers, suppliers to our industry, and our broad customer base.”
The medal’s inscription reads: “In recognition of the outstanding leadership, energy, and personal commitment he has brought to the cause of fair trade for North American steel producers and their customers; his commitment to a unified steel industry response to the critical public policy issues of our time; and his commitment to innovative technology and employee relations.”
Established in 1927, the Gary Medal is named for Judge Elbert H. Gary, the first president of AISI, and recognizes an individual for his or her remarkable lifelong contributions to the North American steel industry.
DiMicco joined Nucor Corp. in 1982 as plant metallurgist and quality control manager for Nucor Steel in Plymouth, Utah, and in 1988 he became melting and casting manager at the Utah division. In 1991 DiMicco became general manager of the Nucor-Yamato joint venture in Blytheville, Ark., and became vice president in 1992. He became executive vice president in 1999.
Before joining Nucor, DiMicco was with Republic Steel Corp. in Cleveland as research metallurgist and project leader. He was with the company from 1975 until he joined Nucor in 1982.
DiMicco graduated from Brown University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, metallurgy, and materials science. He earned a Master of Science degree in metallurgy and materials science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975.
