Carrier, UTEC to close in Indiana

Two HVAC industry business units of Hartford, Conn.-based United Technologies Corp.—Carrier Corp. and UTEC—have announced they will move their manufacturing operations from Indiana to Mexico, eliminating 2,100 jobs.

Carrier Corp. has announced plans to close its Indianapolis plant, which employs 1,400 workers. Layoffs will begin in 2017 and continue for a three-year period. Carrier's residential HVAC headquarters and engineering organization are slated to remain in Indianapolis.

United Technologies Electronic Controls (UTEC) will close its Huntington, Ind., manufacturing operations by 2018, eliminating 700 jobs.

According to Carrier, the closing is in response to the migration of its suppliers and competitors in the HVAC industry to Mexico. UTEC commented that its move is the best way for the company to remain competitive.
