LINE survey: Hiring activity to increase in services and manufacturing in May

In May the hiring rate will rise in the service and manufacturing sectors compared with a year ago, according to the Society for Human Resource Management's (SHRM) Leading Indicators of National Employment (LINE) survey for May 2013.

In May, for the 10th consecutive month, HR professionals report a net rise in employment expectations in services, marking a slight increase compared with a year ago. Year-overyear employment expectations increased marginally in the manufacturing sector.

A net of 42.9 percent of manufacturers will add jobs in May (52.3 percent will hire, 9.4 percent will cut jobs). The sector’s hiring index will rise in May on a year-over-year basis by 2.4 points. A net of 37.1 percent of service-sector companies will grow payrolls in May (46.5 percent will conduct hiring, 9.4 percent will cut jobs). The service hiring index will rise by 6.7 points compared with a year ago.
