Sandvik Coromant hosts manufacturing academy for New Jersey students

Cutting tool supplier Sandvik Coromant, Fair Lawn, N.J., recently teamed up with New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, N.J., and Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg, N.J., to host the Young Manufacturers Summer Academy (YMSA). The academy gave local students an inside look at and first-hand experience in working in the manufacturing industry.

The YMSA provided middle and high school students interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) the opportunity to work alongside Sandvik Coromant engineers to gain manufacturing skills by experimenting with high-tech manufacturing tools and equipment, sketching isometric drawings, and receiving a demonstration in machining.

Participating students also visited additional local companies and schools, including Stryker Corp., Festo Didactic Corp., Weiss-Aug Co. Inc., Raritan Valley Community College, and Pascack Hills High School, to learn more about opportunities within the manufacturing industry.

YMSA is part of the "Dream It. Do It." network, created by the Manufacturing Institute, Washington, D.C., which conducts nearly 40 programs in more than 35 states.

"The overall goal of the YMSA is to help close the skills gap issue our industry currently faces," said Jennifer McNelly, president of The Manufacturing Institute. "Through our STEM-focused initiatives, we are able to provide students with the resources needed for a successful career in the manufacturing industry."
