Caldera passes away at 61

Alessandro Caldera, founding developer of WinCan™ pipe inspection and asset management software, has died at the age of 61.

Caldera brought software technology to the discipline of underground infrastructure and continually incorporated innovations such as GIS mapping, side-scan imaging, asset management, image measurement, geometric analysis, and 3-D visualization.

"Anyone who knew Alessandro remembers his passion for programming and his commitment to bring emerging technologies to pipeline inspection," said Mike Russin, account manager at Pipeline Analytics, North American distributor of WinCan. "Perhaps his greatest contribution in recent years was to build a team that could carry on his vision in his absence. We will miss him terribly, but his spirit lives on in every corner of this company."

The software transforms raw inspection data into the intelligence municipalities and contractors need to make critical maintenance decisions. The software's measurement tools help quantify defects, and sophisticated search capabilities filter observations by any combination of criteria. Its report generator automatically summarizes inspection findings using a standard or user-defined template.

Caldera is survived by his wife Patricia, a company shareholder who in recent years has become increasingly involved with corporate governance in coordination with the company's managing director, Martin Hien. Caldera also is survived by two sons.
