Friction welding systems designed for specific applications

Coldwater Machine Co. has introduced FWS series friction welding systems. They use a direct-drive approach: One workpiece is stationary and the other piece is rotated on a spindle at a constant speed by an electric motor.

The machines control rotational speeds with parameters from 2,000 to 23,000 RPM, as well as forging forces of 335 to 12,000 lbf. They can be designed with a maximum weld area of 0.992 in.2

Stand-alone vertical and horizontal machines are available for integration into a workcell or as part of an automated processing line. Each system is designed to fit the application, which determines rotational speeds, cycle times, and forging forces for each joint based on the material composition, part configuration, and contact surface area of the specific parts to be joined.
