Femtosecond laser processing allows cutting, drilling with no thermal damage

LSA Laser has added femtosecond laser processing capabilities for medical device manufacturing. The lasers can drill and cut high-precision holes and shapes free from thermal damage, the company reports.

The ultrafast laser system vaporizes matter without HAZ, making it suitable for use on advanced microdesigns and difficult-to-process metals. It also can cut multiple layered materials at once or drill and cut microshapes. With the laser, the company processes a variety of materials, including platinum and stainless steel.

The new system was custom-designed to be flexible and suitable for on- or off-axis cutting and R&D or volume applications. It can handle both flat stock and tube cutting on the same system with minimal setup.
