Synthetic lubricant designed for use on galvanized steel

IRMCO has developed the first oil-free lubricant for use on automotive electrogalvanized and galvannealed metals. The synthetic stamping lubricant is designed for use on zinc-coated sheet metal.

During development, the company performed a twist compression test, which measures the coefficient of friction on steel surfaces, to evaluate the lubricant’s tribology and effect on tool wear. To test corrosion, the company coated galvanized panels with the lubricant at various dilutions and observed them for corrosion over time in stack/stain.

The firm also performed a copper sulfate test to demonstrate ease of cleanability and formed a 12-in.-dia. blank into a cup to evaluate the lubricant’s effectiveness.
