GM announces production shutdowns due to semiconductor chip shortage

General Motors has announced it will idle production at most of its North American assembly plants because of the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage.

The production stoppages, most lasting two weeks, will occur at eight North American GM assembly plants in September. Operations will continue at facilities in Arlington, Texas; Bowling Green, Ky.; and Flint and Lansing Grand River in Michigan.

During production downtime, the automaker will repair and ship unfinished vehicles from many impacted plants.
