Altair Eng., CAR announces winners of Enlighten Awards

GM won the Full Vehicle category award for its 2019 Chevrolet Silverado.

Altair Eng. Inc. and the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) have announced the winners of the 6th annual Altair Enlighten Award. The awards honor the greatest achievements in vehicle weight savings each year.

The winner in the Full Vehicle category is General Motors’ 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, which weighs 450 lbs. less than its predecessor. BMW Group won the Module category with the first 3-D-printed metal component used in a production series vehicle, which achieved a 44 percent component weight savings on the 2018 BMW i8 Roadster.

Asahi Kasei Corp.’s super-lightweight pedal bracket for the Mazda MX-5, Sika Automotive’s ultra-lightweight constrained layer material system, and United States Steel Corp’s Mart-Ten™ 1500 martensitic AHSS took the top honors in the Enabling Technology category. The award for the new Future of Lightweighting category went to American Axle & Mfg. Inc. for its Quantum Driveline Architecture program.
