SMS group receives order from Nucor Steel Gallatin for hot strip galvanizing line

SMS group has received an order to supply a heat-to-coat line with an annual capacity of 500,000 tons for Nucor Steel Gallatin in Ghent, Ky.

The U-shaped line includes a turbulence pickling system, an X-Pro® laser welding machine, an inductive heating system, FOEN galvanizing equipment, and a Drever after-pot cooling system. For post treatment, a skin pass mill, a tension leveler, and a horizontal roll coater system are integrated.

Production rate is 180 tons per hour with a strip thickness up to ¼ in. and width up to 73 in.

The heat-to-cost process permits the production of galvanized steel strip with corrosion protection, an appealing appearance, and increased mechanical load capacity, says the company.

Startup is anticipated for 2019.
