S&P Global Platts presents 2019 Global Metals Awards

London-based S&P Global Platts, an independent provider of information, analytics, and benchmark prices for the commodities and energy markets, has announced the winners of its Global Metals Awards. The awards recognize companies for their exemplary performance in 14 categories of steel, metals, and mining. This year’s honorees represent four continents and 18 countries.

Montreal-based Rio Tinto Aluminium won the Metals Company of the Year Award. The first company to attain Chain of Custody certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative in 2018, Rio Tinto went on to commercialize aluminum in conjunction with coffee machine maker and coffee retailer Nespresso, proving that producing metal responsibly can also be profitable. Rio Tinto Aluminium also won the 2019 Industry Leadership Award - Nonferrous.

The CEO of the Year Award went to John Ferriola, CEO of steelmaker Nucor Group, based in Charlotte, N.C. Judges noted his shepherding of a $9 billion-plus company investment, as well as the strong financial performance and solid balance sheet he’s overseen.

Gregg Mollins of Los Angeles-based metals service center Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. received this year's Lifetime Achievement Award, with judges praising his “leadership, integrity, and strategic vision.” From his start as a warehouseman to eventually becoming CEO, Mollins was faithful to a decades-long strategic vision of focusing on profit and inventory management, organic growth, and an aggressive acquisition strategy.
