United States Steel publishes sustainability report

Pittsburgh-based United States Steel Corp. has released its Sustainability Report 2017. The report highlights the company’s renewed commitment to transparency in its sustainability efforts, including recent innovations in operations, as well as corporate responsibility practices related to environmental stewardship, safety, governance, culture and ethics, and compliance.

According to the report, U.S. Steel is the only American steel producer to have a third-generation AHSS approved for automotive customers to help improve fuel mileage and increase safety. In addition, the steelmaker has achieved annual recycling of more than 7.5 million tons of materials, including 2.9 million tons of scrap steel that is used to create new steel products. The company also has announced its commitment to establish a greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal by the end of 2019.

U.S. Steel performed approximately 89 percent better than its peers when compared to the serious injury cases for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for Iron and Steel in 2016, the report states. In 2017, its employees conducted more than 300,000 hours of training in areas such as safety, job skills, and leadership.

In addition, the company is focused on fostering a high-performance culture characterized by accountability, fairness, respect, and adherence to the highest ethical standards. Its inaugural Inclusion Survey provided direct feedback on opportunities to strengthen its culture around diversity and inclusion.
