LIA offers industrial laser safety officer training

Laser Institute of America will offer training for laser safety officers (LSO) in manufacturing and industrial facilities at IPG Photonics Corp. – Midwest in Novi, Mich. The class will be held Feb. 14-15, May 16-17, Aug. 15-16, and Nov. 14-15.

This course teaches a nonmathematical approach to facilitating the duties of an LSO. It is designed to fit the needs of environmental health and safety professionals, engineers, laser operators, and laser technicians who are not required to perform hazard analysis calculations.

Developed and taught by LIA experts, the course is suitable for all levels of experience involved in industrial and manufacturing applications of lasers. This course meets all LSO training requirements outlined by ANSI and OSHA and is worth 16 CECs by AAHP and 2.0 BLS CM points by the Board of Laser Safety.

The course provides an overview of industrial laser applications and knowledge of biological hazards associated with industrial laser processes, explains how to prevent industrial laser accidents through control measures, offers familiarity with nonbeam hazards in industrial laser processing, provides general knowledge of laser safety fundamentals and terminology, and offers an overview of the ANSI Z136 standards applicable to the industry.
