Olympus SteerROVER motorized steerable scanner performs remote weld inspection, corrosion mapping

Olympus has added a motorized steerable scanner to its line of systems for ultrasonic and phased array testing. The field-tested, remote-controlled SteerROVER™ scanner performs circumferential weld inspection and corrosion mapping using a raster arm. The unit is operated by a touchscreen, hand-held remote control, and the operator collects ultrasonic data using a compatible instrument, such as a flaw detector or phased array data acquisition unit.

The scanner features two pods with independent motors and four magnetic wheels, which allows the operator to steer it in hard-to-reach areas. With the touchscreen remote and two joysticks, the operator controls the scanner’s position in relation to the weld or zone to be mapped.

The machine comes with a motorized raster arm for corrosion inspection or a four-probe holder rack for weld inspection. It performs longitudinal inspection of welds on pipes as small as 12 in. OD. The drive pods and pivoting probe holder can fold to adapt to a variety of pipe diameters.
