Best practices for fabricators using brushes and abrasive wheels

Webinar shares tips to help make the work faster and safer on shop floor

Metal fabricator using a grinder

Metal fabricators using abrasives and brushes properly promotes safety and efficiency on the shop floor. Join The WELDER and Weiler Abrasives for a webcast about this very subject on June 3.

Cleaning, deburring, grinding, finishing, and cutting are necessary steps in welding and metal fabrication. But these processes, along with the tools and products that perform them, must be handled with respect and care to ensure operator safety. Without proper training and safety precautions, wire brushes and abrasive products can be extremely dangerous.

Next month Weiler Abrasives will present “Safe and Proper Use of Abrasives and Brushes: Improve Workplace Safety and Productivity,” a webinar hosted by The WELDER and presented by Weiler Abrasive’s Rick Hopkins.

As the company’s senior product manager, Hopkins works with metal fabricators and provides product recommendations based on their specific goals and application needs. He also has authored several articles about grinding and abrasives for The WELDER and sister publication The Tube & Pipe Journal.

In “Safe practices for wire brushes and abrasives,” which originally appeared in the May/June 2019 issue of The WELDER, Hopkins states:

It’s human nature to do whatever it takes to get the job done. When a product or tool isn’t performing as expected, it’s natural to want to take it upon yourself to adjust form or technique to make the product do the job. But when pushed beyond the conditions of their design, these products can pose danger to you, your co-workers, and the equipment around you. Reducing the potential for personal injury is always the most important goal. Preventing injuries also saves operations time and money, and using wire brushes and abrasives properly can result in performance and efficiency benefits that impact the bottom line.
