Q: I need to repair an aluminum casting, but I have no idea what specific alloy it is. What filler metal should I choose? A: You can’t tell what an aluminum alloy is just by looking at it. Realistically, you’ll probably have to choose the filler alloy without being sure which casting alloy you...
Consumables Corner: Examining the root cause of distortion

Q: We manufacture hydraulic cylinders. Ever since we changed our shielding gas blend, we’ve noticed a higher level of distortion. Before the change we used a 95/5 blend, but now we use 92/8, which we have documented using a 0.045-in.-dia. filler metal. Would the 92/8 blend run hotter and cause...

- Article
Approximately 100,000 Americans suffer serious head injuries on the job each year, and nearly 1,000 American workers suffer job-related eye injuries each day. A common challenge when it comes to PPE compliance for the head, face, and eyes is to ensure health and safety are not sacrificed for efficiency and productivity, or vice versa. Increasingly higher noncompliance rates with PPE protocols is an alarming trend and a serious threat to your overall health and safety. Whether due to economic conditions, flawed safety programs, or attitudes that result in at-risk behaviors, these safety gaps must be addressed.

Supplying gas to your metalworking applications can be complicated, especially if the gas needs to reach multiple locations. If you are looking for cost savings and productivity gains, consider installing gas cylinders at one main location and controlling them with a basic manifold or switchover manifold. With this method you won’t need to worry about cylinders running out of gas.
