Talking heads have plenty to say about additive manufacturing

The president of 3D printer builder BigRep America and the former director of the Research and Innovation Center at Ford take a deep dive into AM

The Additive Report recently hosted a video podcast featuring two longtime members of the 3D printing community: the president of BigRep America, Frank Marangell, and consultant Michael Whitens, former global director of Ford Motor Co.’s Vehicle and Enterprise Sciences at Ford’s Research and Innovation Center.

Titled Thought Leader Exchange: Additive and Its Impact on Manufacturing and hosted by Editor-in-Chief Don Nelson, the wide-ranging conversation takes deep-dives into:

• How additive is changing manufacturing.

• Moving beyond prototyping, jigs, and fixtures into end-use parts.

• DfAM (designing for additive manufacturing) and generative design.

• The buzz surrounding metal 3D printing.

• The impacts different-size companies will have on additive’s growth.

• Getting management on board with additive.

• Building a strong supplier-user partnership.

Additive has the potential to “revolutionize how we manufacture things,” said Whitens. “There are tremendous opportunities when we look at customization, build-to-order, and, from a green perspective, the ability to ship resin at 99% density to a site and produce parts on-site. [That] can revolutionize not only manufacturing but how industry transports goods in general.”
