3D printer builder Desktop Metal targets foundries with ExOne sand printer

The ExOne S-Max Flex is the latest sand binder-jet 3D printing system from Desktop Metal, which acquired ExOne in late 2021. The turnkey system, designed to be a precise, robust, affordable tool for foundries entering the era of digital casting, features DM’s patent-pending Single Pass Jetting (SPJ) technology.

The S-Max pairs an industrial robot with a new end-effector printhead that deposits binder into a 1,900- by 1,000- by 1,000-mm telescoping build box that expands as parts are built layer by layer.

According to the company, its SPJ technology allows a top build rate of 115 l/hr., prints standard silica sand with furan-resin binders, and delivers final parts with a dimensional accuracy of ±0.5 mm. The system comes with multiple accessories and safety features that are configurable to fit a variety of spaces.
