Thermwood offers a smaller version of its hybrid large-scale additive manufacturing system

Thermwood has built its first LSAM 1010, a new type of 3D printer and material-trimming machine. The fixed-table, high-wall machine is fitted with print and trim heads mounted on a single gantry.

Its 10- by 10-ft. table is a bit smaller than larger dual-gantry LSAMs. The 1010 can print and trim but not at the same time. And it has the same standard 40mm printhead and 5-axis trim head found on larger LSAMs.

Fixing the heads on a single gantry requires the gantry to be significantly longer to accommodate the width of both heads while allowing the heads to reach all areas of the table. Also, the 1010’s gantry is significantly stronger to rigidly support both the print and trim heads, which, together, weigh more than 7,000 lbs. The result is a live load—the weight of the machine components that move—of more than 18,000 lbs. Despite the weight, the travel speeds are nearly 3 ft./sec.

The 1010 can be ordered as a “print only” machine, which reduces its cost compared to a dual-head model.
