Plate rolling follows trends curves
- By Kate Bachman
- Mar 5, 2018
- Bending and Forming
- Article
Plate rolling, a long-established powerhouse technology for curving thick plate steel, continues to roll forward, following trends curves to respond to changing needs. Demands to roll harder metal types, tighter radii, and for less complicated operation are bending the way that plate rolling machinery is being built--with more automation, IoT, new roll configurations, more force, and improved CNC. Industry experts Massimo Roccia, president of MG s.r.l., Peter Nilsson, founder of SweBend (represented by Trilogy Machinery), and Steve Addy, executive vice president of Faccin USA, offered their perspectives on current trends in plate rolling technology and expectations for its future.

Compound tools stamp precise, thin materials in a complex world

Phoenix Specialty stamps washers, shims, seals, gaskets, and spacers--round, flat parts, 6 inches in diameter and smaller. Nothing could be simpler to stamp, right? However, complicating the stamping is that most of the company’s clients are in industries that require extreme precision, flatness, and concentricity, in small quantities out of very thin, foil-like metal. In addition, the company services 25 new clients every month, builds10 new tools every day and has 50 tool setups and job completions daily. One way that the stamping manufacturer meets the demand for multiple short-run jobs a day making very precise flat and circular parts is by using compound die sets with interchangeable tooling. The company re-engineered its master die set, which it calls next-generation tooling, to substantially simplify changeover.

Redundant safety systems: necessary or excessive?
- By Kate Bachman
- Oct 6, 2017
- Bending and Forming
- Article
Redundant safety systems are landing under the microscope of those scouring regulations for rollback opportunities. Hydraulic press builders and press owners have been working to meet American National Standards Institute: (ANSI) standard B11.2-2013, Safety Requirements for Hydraulic and Pneumatic Presses, regarding secondary load holding during production. Intuitive reasoning would dictate that there is no acceptable risk of injury, right? Yet, adding safety features and safeguards does not come free. Ultimately, adding safety measures adds cost to machinery and equipment, especially if they are done as a retrofit. So where is the line?

When one of the largest, most prominent, high-tech metal stamping press OEMs sites its annual conference at a lab devoted to plastic composites development for the automotive industry, it gives you pause. Then again, if a vacuum maker, a computer maker, and a search engine company can manufacture a car and an online commerce company can go into the grocery business, is it really such a stretch for a stamping manufacturer to produce plastic, compression-molded components on a hydraulic press?

Preparing structural steel surfaces for painting, coating standards
- By Kate Bachman
- Aug 10, 2017
- Cutting and Weld Prep
- Article
Mill scale, dirt, laser scale, rust, heat-treat scale, grease, and dust interfere with paint and coatings’ adhesion to structural steel and must be removed before steel members can be coated. What are structural steel fabricators doing about surface preparation, and what options are available? Surface preparation can run from simple chemical cleaning to abrasion methods such as grinding and abrasive blasting. Many fabricators’ projects come with surface specifications prescribed by The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) standards

Stamping manufacturer Scandic Springs, San Leandro, Calif., encountered severe tooling, problems while stamping a particularly difficult but critical automotive component. Dies were cracking. Parts were failing. Small hole-punch tools were breaking faster than a runaway car down Lombard Street. The shock at snap-through could register on the Richter scale. The manufacturer resolved the problems by using the ability to slow the piercing at BDC using a servo press.
