The Fabricator October 2016 - Page 2
The Fabricator is North America's leading magazine for the metal forming and fabricating industry. The magazine delivers the news, technical articles, and case histories that enable fabricators to do their jobs more efficiently. The Fabricator has served the industry since 1970.
The smart factory of the future
- By Will Healy III
- Oct 10, 2016
- Shop Management
- Article
Metal fabricators hoping to survive a global economy and shrinking workforce can look at the trends and “what-ifs” in the next industrial age of connected machines.
Poor inventory management: The hidden profitability killer in manufacturing
- By Bridget L. Lazlo
- Oct 10, 2016
- Shop Management
- Article
Perfectly accurate inventory records will help you improve turns, which frees up cash; improve customer service, because you know what you have when a customer calls; increase shop productivity, because material will be available when needed; and increase profitability, because you won’t be writing off inventory that isn’t there.

- Shop Management
- Article
A fabricator’s marketing function shouldn’t be about tradeshow booths, brochures, and websites. It’s not there simply to serve the sales function. Instead, marketing reinforces a fabricator’s value proposition and, ultimately, helps drive the direction of the business.
Hammering out the return on investment in safety
- By John Peabody

- Safety
- Article
The first step in making the case for a return on investment on safety equipment and training is understanding the real costs associated with accidents and illnesses that occur as a result of the workplace environment.
Uncover the hidden costs of roll forming
- By Patrick Kitchen
- Oct 6, 2016
- Roll Forming
- Article
Tooling is of course a significant cost driver in roll forming. But reducing costs takes more than scrutinizing the number of passes a roll formed cross section requires. It also calls for looking at the big picture and questioning the status quo.
5 factors driving the punch/laser cutting machine investment
- By Brian Welz

- Punching and Other Holemaking
- Article
Does a punch/laser combination system make sense for your operation? For the answer, consider these five factors: part geometry; process throughput; lean manufacturing; process flexibility; and automation.
Precision sawing: Mind the miter
- By Richard Klipp
- Oct 5, 2016
- Sawing
- Article
Miter cutting tube and other workpieces can be extremely critical, especially when dealing with frameworks and other large assemblies. One seemingly small error in a miter cut can throw a large assembly significantly out of tolerance. This is where automation and precision control in sawing come into play.

- Article
Earlier this year Worthington Specialty Processing, a toll processor serving the automotive industry, among others, installed a continuous-feed, coil-fed laser blanking line. An idea with roots in the 1990s has finally become reality.
Going beyond OSHA regulations for manganese exposure
- By Jeff Jackson
- May 11, 2015
- Safety
- Article
Complying with OSHA guidelines for manganese exposure during welding may not be doing welders any favors. One Oregon metal fabricator invited OSHA into its shop to look for ways to reduce the potential of manganese exposure. The combination of low-manganese welding wire and proper ventilation positioning appears to have cleared the air on this subject.
Portable pipe cutting tool simplifies sawing process
- By Eric Lundin
- Jul 7, 2014
- Power Tools
- Article
It's not often that a tool as simple as a hand-held circular saw wins an award for its design, but it happened when Exact Pipe Tools Inc. submitted three models to Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, one of the oldest design institutes in Europe. The saw clamps to the pipe, so users are safer and cuts are straighter.
