Gerdau Steel Mill celebrates 60th anniversary with groundbreaking

Gerdau Steel Mill recently marked its 60th year in business by breaking ground on an environmental upgrade to its full-production steel mill in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
The “$22 million investment … will make our Rancho mill one of the greenest in the nation, if not the world,” said Peter Campo, president of Gerdau Long Steel North America. The mill, which is California’s largest metal recycler, employs about 275 steelworkers. Every year the mill diverts more than 440,000 tons of scrap metal from local landfills or from being sent overseas and recycles it into seismic rebar that is used to construct new buildings, bridges, and freeways in California.
Mark Olson, vice president and general manager of the Rancho mill, said the new “pulse jet bag-house” environmental project will capture 99.9 percent of the contaminants in the mill’s emissions. Current equipment already captures 99.4 percent of the emissions.
The bag-house project will be completed in 2018 and follows more than $7 million in other upgrades that the company has made to the mill in the past five years.
