Refill friction stir spot weld system offers alternative to single-point joining
- March 16, 2015

- Assembly and Joining
Coldwater Machine Co. offers the SpotMeld™ refill friction stir spot weld (RFSSW) system that enables spot joining of aluminum (1000 to 7000 series), magnesium, nonferrous, and dissimilar sheet materials. It is an alternative to single-point joining processes such as resistance spot welding, laser welding, and riveting.
Rotational friction generates heat between the tool and material, creating a soft region. Pressure then is applied, resulting in a solid-state joint. The process offers a small HAZ, consistent weld duplication, and fast meld times, the company states. It requires no filler material and generates no spatter, smoke, radiation, or shield gases.
