Hybrid welding system combines plasma arc and GMAW

Welding Solutions Inc. has introduced the Super-MIG™ hybrid welding system.
The system—combining plasma arc and GMAW into a single hybrid process—provides fast welding speeds under variable gap conditions, deep weld penetration, reduced spatter, and a narrower HAZ, the company reports. It welds most standard GMAW, plasma, and laser applications.
The interface and torch, patented by Plasma Laser Technologies, is designed for integration with common GMAW systems, such as Lincoln, Miller, Panasonic, OTC, and ESAB.
During the GMAW process, a plasma electrode establishes an arc at the leading position, creating a keyhole in the parent material to eliminate arc start delay and reduce arc start failure mode for deep penetration.
The system is suitable for industrial-grade steels; stainless steel; high-strength, coated metals; and titanium. It includes an interface, compatible with most robot controllers, that stores multiple welding programs; a Super-MIG torch; and a torch cleaning station designed to function automatically within a robotic welding cell.
