Getting more out of a tube or pipe mill stresses everything, and even if the motors, shafts, and gearboxes are up to the task, the universal joints are likely to suffer. Upgrading the universal joints can help in high-stress situations.

On a conventional tube mill, one drive unit determines the tooling speed for several tool sets. Because each set has an optimal speed, this setup is a compromise. Some rotate faster and some slower than the optimum. These days, it’s actually affordable to have one drive system for each tool pair, and in some cases, one drive for each tool.
