The Tube and Pipe Journal July-August 2021
The Tube and Pipe Journal became the first magazine dedicated to serving the metal tube and pipe industry in 1990. Today, it remains the only North American publication devoted to this industry, and it has become the most trusted source of information for tube and pipe professionals.

The pandemic is on the run and industry is recovering—well, some industries have been in a state of recovery for quite a while now—but for some companies, it’s not business as usual. Those entrepreneurs who had been thinking about selling their companies should know that merger and acquisition activity is going full tilt right now, so this might be a good time to sell.
Adding a lubrication step to a tube bending process is best done up front

- Tube and Pipe Fabrication
- Article
Too many times, a fabricator bids on a tube bending project using the results of a couple of test bends. When ramping up to production speed, the fabricator then finds that the process generates much more friction than before and it needs a lubricant to protect the tooling. Adding a lubrication operation after signing a contract is troublesome at best and likely to require a costly remedy (and lost production time) at worst.

Many people think that blockchain is synonymous with cryptocurrency, but that’s not accurate. Blockchain is a secure database that works as an accounting ledger, preventing cryptocurrency fraud. It also can be used for traceability throughout a manufacturing process, providing a complete and accurate manufacturing record of metal products such as the pipe that goes into making pipelines.

A high-mix, low-volume fabricator through and through, Custom Tube Products has developed a core competence in automation. The skilled labor shortage is as acute in the local area as it is anywhere else, and the company has been automating processes for more than 15 years. To that end, it recently invested in a tube bender that fits its business plan and culture like a glove.

To get tube or pipe from a mill line to a bundler, a conventional method is to lift the workpieces with forks and drop them, which is a forceful, noisy process. In redesigning this process, Fives developed Robopack, a pick-and-place system that uses a robot’s chief capabilities to provide a dexterous, deliberate handling and bundling process.
Progress in inline seam annealing for small-diameter tube, pipe producers

Normalizing small-diameter pipe often is a matter of heat-treating the entire cross-section, but for one specific application, this is particularly wasteful. The tube, in this case, runs nearly seven miles, so great care goes into the design of each piece of equipment on the normalizing line to ensure it doesn't generate any scrap.
