The humanity behind precision sheet metal bending

Twists, turns, and a metal tale to be learned through Murphy's Law

Editor’s Note: Few have worked with so many engineers and press brake operators as Steve Benson. He’s spent a career getting everyone on the same page and speaking the same language: “A k-factor is not a bend allowance, and a bend allowance is not a bend deduction.”

Work life becomes better when everyone knows they couldn’t do their jobs well without each other’s help, and this certainly applies to engineers and press brake operators. This month, Benson strays from his usual prose to tackle the human aspects behind precision sheet metal bending.

In the world of engineers, so wise,
Where metal sheets meet watchful eyes.
They craft designs with the utmost care,
With specs precise, beyond compare.

In a realm of numbers and plans so fine,
Where metal’s shaped on a press brake line.

A Murphy, though, makes a cameo,
With quirks and twists in every throw.
If there’s a way to twist a bend,
Someone will; it’s not the end.

Murphy’s Law, in engineering’s hand,
Where precision meets the whimsy band.

In the workshop, parts take their birth,
On a press brake, bending metal’s worth.

But Murphy sneaks in, with his grin,
And brings a twist to the design within.
Dimensions off by a hair so small,
A metal sheet, once straight, takes a fall.

Tolerances tested, designs redrawn,
Murphy’s pranks go on and on.
The engineers, they puzzle, they plot,
Seek perfection, no matter what.

In the world of metal, sharp and smart,
Murphy’s whimsy plays his part.

So remember, dear engineers, so bold,
Murphy’s whimsy, as the tale is told.
In the land of metal, precise and grand,
Murphy’s Law takes a stand.

In the world of engineers, so fine,
Where precision meets the deadline.
Murphy’s Law is in your song,
A part of the journey all along.

But press brake prima donnas, please take heed,
The engineers’ knowledge is what you need.
To make it all work as you aspire,
Their data is what you should require.

In their calculations and meticulous charts,
Lies the key to avoiding Murphy’s darts.
They’ve done the math, the testing, the grind,
To ensure your press brake results will shine.

So, prima donnas of the press brake art,
Don’t let your ego keep you apart.
The engineers’ wisdom is your guiding star,
To make the metal bend near and far.

The information they provide is a treasure,
To ensure your works beyond all measure.
With their guidance and precision in hand,
You’ll conquer Murphy’s Law’s shifting sand.

For press brake prima donnas to succeed,
In every metal sheet, they feed.
They must embrace the knowledge given,
By the engineers, whose mission’s driven.

To make metal bend without a flaw,
With calculated precision and the law.
For in unity, the team will shine,
And create metal wonders, so divine.

So let the engineers and prima donnas unite,
To conquer Murphy’s Law, with all their might.
In the world of metal, they’ll find their way,
And together, they’ll make each challenge obey.

In this tale of Murphy’s Law, so sly,
Engineering excellence will reach the sky.

Huh? What? Wait a minute. What did I just say? Now I’m confused. OK, next month, I’ll wait for the drugs to wear off before I start writing.
