Schuler delivers spiral pipe mill to Tuberías Procarsa

Göppingen, Germany-based Schuler has delivered a spiral pipe mill to Tuberías Procarsa in Monclova, Mexico, for production of pipes with diameters of 20 to 88 in. and lengths of 39 to 80 ft.

The spiral mill works with hot-rolled coil raw steel, up to 1 in. thick. It forms the diameter and tack welds the spiral pipe in the first step. Several welding stands use submerged arc welding to complete the final welds.

The integrated coil preparation stand helps ensure an exact 90-degree cut of the beginning of the band. A crane transfer is not required. All relevant work steps on the spiral mill are automated; settings are done on the control panel and implemented by servomotors.

The 935-ft. mill includes ultrasonic, X-ray, and water pressure stands for inspecting the pipe in accordance with the API 5L standard. The manufacturer expects the spiral pipe mill to increase production capacity at Tuberías Procarsa by 200,000 tons a year.
