Most durable goods manufacturing sectors improved in December 2020 compared to the month earlier, but remained below December 2019 levels. Overall the economic recovery continues on a path that projects a return to prepandemic output levels by midyear, although employment is expected to lag.

Some sectors of the economy are hot and some are not. Many industries are doing well, the unemployment rate is improving, and housing sales activity from November 2020 to November 2021 increased 25%. However, several other indicators are cause for concern about the recovery. Improvements are likely to follow two developments in late December: vaccine approval and the federal spending plan.

Although much of the durable goods industry is still holding up, several sectors have experienced month-to-month declines of 8 to 10% on account of COVID-19. These are some of the biggest declines since the end of WWII. The only durable goods sector that showed improvement recently is communications equipment.
