Powdermet receives 2012 NorTech Innovation Award

Powdermet Inc., Euclid, Ohio, has won a 2012 NorTech Innovation Award for its MComP™ (micro/nanocomposite) hierarchically structured supermetals. The materials offer very high strength-to-weight ratios in magnesium and aluminum alloys.

The award finalists are selected annually by a panel of academic, technical, investment, and business leaders from various organizations throughout northeast Ohio. Nominees compete for awards in one of five key areas: advanced energy; advanced materials; biosciences; flexible electronics; and instrumentation, controls, and electronics.

The metals are suitable for applications in which weight reduction is critical and volumetric properties cannot be sacrificed. By controlling the microstructure at the nano-scale, Powdermet can make the composites with use-specific features, such as stiffness and strength.

NorTech is a nonprofit economic development organization for northeast Ohio's emerging technology industries. Powdermet Inc. is a producer of nanoengineered metallic composites.
