Leveling monitor enables remote adjustment

The Bradbury Co. Inc. has received patent approval for its Flat Trak® strip evaluation system. The system, released in 2005, is the first noncontact strip monitor to qualify for a patent, the company reports.
The system is designed to achieve strip flatness for old and new levelers. A touchscreen display provides a real-time, shaped, cross-section view of each strip's profile after it leaves the leveler. Without mechanical contact, the system measures the moving strip, automatically comparing calculations to determine degree of flatness.
Strip condition is signaled by a three-color status light mounted near the top of the unit. A green light indicates that the strip is within an acceptable customer-defined range. An amber light warns operators that the strip is approaching an outer limit of the programmed flatness standard. A red light signals that material flatness is out of preset limits and adjustments are required to restore the process to the desired range.
When connected to the company's hydraulic leveler, the system controls allow users to view leveler performance and adjust settings from a remote location.
