Die Science: Choosing between pressure pads and stripper plates
- By Art Hedrick
- Mar 6, 2017
- Bending and Forming
- Article
Many problems result from a poorly designed or completely absent pressure pad. In the May/June 2013 issue of STAMPING Journal, I discussed the characteristics of the three kinds of pressure pads. Now it’s time to review the pressure pad styles and see how they compare to stripper plates. Stripper...

Die Science: Bridge strippers versus spring strippers
- By Art Hedrick
- Mar 6, 2017
- Bending and Forming
- Article
A recent consultation job reminded me of the importance of selecting the best method for stripping cutting punches. It’s not that I haven’t seen similar problems in the past; rather it’s the simple fact that using the wrong type of stripper can result in catastrophic tool failure, as well as...

Taking charge of taking inventory
- By Eric Lundin
- Mar 6, 2017
- Shop Management

Taking inventory of any sort of item is a monotonous task that kills productivity and saps morale, and tube and pipe are especially challenging. Scott Ross learned a thing or two about inventory control at one of the most inventory-intensive companies in the world, Amazon, and has brought some of his knowledge and experience to the tube and pipe industry through his company, Invictus Inventory.

Using heat to form complex metal parts
- By Eric Lundin
- Mar 6, 2017
- Tube and Pipe Fabrication
- Article
Just as hydroforming was “discovered” in the late 1980s or early 1990s, as it transitioned from just a few specialized industries into more mainstream manufacturing segments, another, related process is forging a similar path: Hot metal gas forming. Similar to hydroforming, but performed at elevated temperatures, it does many of the things hydroforming once did – forms difficult shapes and complex shapes, reduces part weight, exhibits less wall thinning than some competing processes – but takes them further because it works with more pliable material.
